How to be an electrician

18 September 2012

There is still a huge demand for qualified competent electricians here in the UK. True the construction trade has struggled during the recession but times are changing. With the relaxing of building permission laws recently and all of the new housing being built, times are looking prosperous.
A complete career change can be daunting but there is a route open to anyone wanting to change their career or become a qualified electrician.
You will need to complete a level 3 electrical certificate such as the City & Guilds 2330 course. This can take as little as 32 weeks to achieve on a part time basis.
Following this course you will need to complete the 17th edition wiring regulations course. This qualification is mandatory for every practicing electrician. This is only a short 2/3 day course which gives you an understanding of the wiring regulations all electricians follow.
Finally, an inspection & testing course such as the new 2394 and 2395 electrical qualifications. This course is achievable over 5 days and give you the hands on experience in how to test electrical installations.

You will of course need some experience and then you're on your way to a new career.
